I had a nice surprise in the paper this morning when I found a photo I shot for the New York Times earlier this week. You can read the whole story here.

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of photographing Birreria, the new beer garden on the roof of Eataly in the Flatiron District. In other news I’ve added a Food and Drink section to my website. You should check it out.

Last month I had the opportunity to photograph wine maker Alie Shaper at her Brooklyn Oenology tasting room in Williamsburg for Edible Brooklyn. Alie was great to work with and I always appreciate assignments that I can walk to.

The other weekend I had the opportunity to photograph some of the food vendors at the Hester Street Fair on the Lower East Side for a new client, Time Out New York. The vendors included Adirondack Creamery, Wonder City Coffee and Mighty Balls. What really struck me about them is how they’re all doing this out of a genuine passion for the food they’re creating.

For several months now I’ve been trying to show how large an sinister Woodhull Medical Center feels and how it looms over the neighborhood. I could never seem to capture that feeling from street level but a couple flights up on a rooftop a couple blocks away it can be seen for all its menace.

Another day, another foray into a culture that’s not my own. This time I got to wander around behind the scenes at a debutante ball hosted by St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, a large predominantly Caribbean congregation in East Flatbush. The cotillion itself was held at The Grand Prospect Hall, an enormous Victorian era events venue in South Park Slope known best for their low budget television ads that are ubiquitous on local channels. I love photographing over the top spectacle but had to cut the night short to catch the G train before it stopped running for the weekend.

On Monday I had the opportunity to dip my toes into the charity luncheon circuit thanks to Feather and Ink, event planners who I worked with at a wedding last year. With all the weddings I’ve shot I’ve been able to see many different layers of society but  I still felt like something of a fish out of water at this event. Not to be deterred, I tried to make the most of my time by making interesting and less than obvious pictures around the edges of the event. Even if this isn’t my world, I appreciate how I can see so many different facets of life as a photographer.

I took something of a hiatus with my Newtown Creek project but I’ve gone back out with some fresh eyes. After a year and a half of walking around the creek in all types of light and weather it’s hard to find new things to photograph but I think that’s leading me to find more subtlety rather than just literal representation. Then again there are also scenes like this last one of the Kosciuszko Bridge and Maspeth Creek that I’ve been trying to get right for a long time. I think I’m getting closer. Overall I think the goal of this project is to make photos that are aesthetically interesting enough to lure a viewer into asking questions about our relationship to the environment without necessarily offering any answers. I know I haven’t found those answers yet.

Last weekend I photographed the opening day of little league at Spring Creek Towers way out on the other end of Brooklyn for their local community paper The Spring Creek Sun. This isn’t the sort of thing that I’d want to photograph all the time but it’s nice to document these sorts of quintessentially American events happening in parts of my city that I don’t get out to very often.
