Funeral for Nic Madrazo at Arlington Cemetery

On September 9th, 2008 Marine First Lieutenant Nic Madrazo, 25, of Bothell, Washington died when his convoy triggered a roadside bomb while serving in Afghanistan. Later that month his family laid him to rest in Section 60 at Arlington Cemetery.

I had the opportunity to witness this ritual thanks to my friend and fellow photographer Matt Lutton who is a friend of the Madrazo family. Matt was unable to attend the graveside service at Arlington but asked if I could be there to photograph the proceedings. By going not as a journalist but as a guest of the family I was able to gain a much more intimate perspective of the grief of a family that had lost a son and a brother. I am eternally grateful to Matt for the introduction and to the Madrazos for allowing me to share this moment.
